project: Honda RA272 #6

With the frame, front suspension, motor, & interior mostly done, the build shifts to the body panels and interior detail.

The pedals were masked so that part of it could be sprayed in body color matching TS-7 racing white.  The portion sprayed in TS-7 is partially visible when fully assembled, so some care should be taken to finish it nicely.  The rest was hand painted with the #0 flat brush in X-11 chrome silver.  The shift lever assembly towards the right side of the interior was finished in 3 colors.  The shift knob was done in XF-16 flat aluminum to simulate the look of brushed titanium.  The shift lever box was done in XF-56 metallic grey and the shift rod was finished in X-11 chrome silver.

The main body panel has a portion that requires masking and then semi-gloss black paint.  Initially, I thought it would be easier to spray the panel in white first, then hand brush the smaller dash section in black.  In hindsight, I should have done it the other way around as it is very difficult to touch up a section sprayed with lacquer vs. the brush-able acrylic black.  Basically, I could not make a mistake applying the black or I would have had to respray the body panel (which unfortunately I had to do due to poor masking and paint bleed).

After some light wet-sanding and a respray, I was successful without to much time wasted.

The gauge cluster & steering wheel pictured above was the first use of decals in this kit.  I will cover decal application in the next post.
